EVENING & CALM DRINKS

 (Vata Time – वात काल)

Evening is influenced by Vata — associated with dryness, movement, and lightness. Warm, grounding drinks are preferred.

Turmeric Milk (Haridra Ksheera – हरिद्रा क्षीर)

Overview
Warm milk with a small pinch of turmeric.

When Used
Often included in evening routines for comfort.

Preparation
• Warm milk
• A pinch of turmeric
• Optional small amount of black pepper

Note
Keep spice levels mild.

Ayurvedic View

Turmeric is known as Haridra (हरिद्रा).

Qualities

  • Warm — Ushna (उष्ण)
  • Subtle penetrating quality

Traditionally included to support overall balance and calm Vata (वात).

Herbal Tea

Overview
Evening herbal teas are usually caffeine-free and light.

Purpose
To support a calm wind-down routine.

Best Practice
Avoid strong stimulants late at night.

Ayurvedic View

Herbal teas in Ayurveda are often prepared as Kashaya (कषाय) or stronger decoctions, where herbs are gently boiled to extract deeper properties. Unlike light infusions (Phanta), herbal teas may act more therapeutically and should align with Agni (अग्नि), Dosha (दोष), and season (ऋतु).

Cinnamon Tea (दालचीनी कषाय)

  • Warming, improves circulation
  • Supports sluggish digestion

Licorice Tea (यष्टिमधु कषाय)

  • Madhura (sweet)
  • Soothes throat and Pitta irritation

Moderation principle

Stronger herbal teas should not be consumed excessively. Overuse may disturb doshic balance. Fresh preparation is preferred.

Nut Milk

Overview
Almond or other plant-based milk options prepared fresh.

When to Use
Occasionally in the evening.

Note
Should be light and not overly sweetened.

Ayurvedic View

Nut milk is not classical dairy milk (Ksheera / क्षीर), but can be understood through Ayurvedic qualities (Guna), taste (Rasa), and effect on Dhatu (धातु) nourishment.

When nuts are soaked, blended, and diluted, they become lighter to digest and closer in quality to nourishing tonics. Their impact depends on preparation and quantity.

 Preparation Guidance

  • Always soak nuts (minimum 6–8 hours)
  • Add warming spices for easier digestion
  • Consume warm rather than chilled
