MIDDAY & DIGESTIVE DRINKS

 (Pitta Time – पित्त काल)


 Midday corresponds to peak Agni. Drinks should complement digestion rather than suppress it.

 

Light Herbal Infusions

Overview
Simple herbal teas made with single mild herbs.


Examples
• Tulsi
• Mint
• Ginger (mild)


Guidance
Avoid overly strong combinations. Simplicity is preferred.


Ayurvedic View

Light herbal infusions are gentle water-based preparations made by steeping delicate herbs, flowers, or leaves in warm water. In Ayurveda, they are considered mild yet effective for daily support, especially when aligned with prakriti (प्रकृति), season (ऋतु), and digestive strength (अग्नि). 

 

Primary Actions (Karma / कर्म):

  • Dīpana (दीपन) – supports digestive fire
  • Pācana (पाचन) – aids metabolism
  • Hṛdya (हृद्य) – heart-soothing
  • Tr̥ṣṇā-nigraha (तृष्णा-निग्रह) – relieves thirst

 

Tulsi (तुलसी)

  • Rasa (Taste): Katu, Tikta
  • Guna (Quality): Laghu (light), Ruksha (dry)
  • Virya (Potency): Ushna (warming)
  • Supports immunity and respiratory clarity
     

Pudina (पुदीना)

  • Cooling yet digestive
  • Helps relieve mild bloating
  • Suitable in warmer seasons
     

Chamomile (कैमोमाइल)

  • Mildly calming
  • Supports manas (मनस् – mind) balance
  • Helpful before sleep

Buttermilk (Takra – तक्र)

 Overview
Buttermilk is made by diluting yogurt with water and lightly churning it.


Traditional Use
Often consumed after meals as a lighter alternative to yogurt.


Preparation
• 1 part yogurt
• 2–3 parts water
• Optional mild spices (cumin, coriander)


Guidance
Should be light and well-diluted, not thick.


Ayurvedic View

Takra is mentioned in classical Ayurvedic literature as supportive when properly prepared.


Qualities
• Light — Laghu (लघु)
• Slightly warm
• Balancing for Kapha (कफ) when diluted correctly


Traditional guidance emphasizes thin consistency.

Fennel Water (Shatapushpa – शतपुष्पा)

Overview
Fennel seeds infused in warm water create a mild aromatic drink.


Usage Context
Commonly included after meals in some traditions.


Preparation
• Lightly crushed fennel seeds
• Steeped in warm water for 10–15 minutes


Ayurvedic View

Fennel is known for its mild sweetness and cooling tendency.


Cooling Energy — Sheeta Virya (शीत वीर्य)


May help soothe excess Pitta (पित्त) when used gently.
